Ročov
The village Ročov of today consists of two originally independent settlements - Horní and Dolní Ročov. The older one - Dolní Ročov arose about 1st half of the 14th century around Albrecht of Kolovraty ´s fort. This oldest known ancestor of later widely branched out family gained in 1352 a consent from the emperor Charles IV. to found a town on the hill above his fort. Former name varied as follows: Dráčov, Vysoká, in Latin Alta civitas. The town was founded as scheduled by plan, it stretched out around unusually large and regular square on which markets took place.
The lords of Kolovrat were exchanged in 16th century by the Lobkovic and the last holders were from 1802 the Schwarzenberk.
Development of Horní Ročov began in the second half of 19th century and it was closely related to development in growing hop recorded here as early as in in 14th century. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries the village became a real hop-growing centre of the region. There was the largest hop-field accreage of the district here and meetings of the Czech growers – Bohemian hop-growing society of the Czech kingdom took several times place here.
In addition to hop-growing Ročov was as well a centre of other crafts. Afteer 1860 a trade association was established here, with the residence in Ročov, where also craftsmen from 18 surrounding villages belonged to.
Upswing of the village came evident also in its public utilities: in 1870 was established a post-office, 1885 was built up a telegraph, 1877 was opened a pharmacy and 10 years later a doctor began to have surgery. Long-term tradition relates to school, situated earlier in Dolní Ročov, in 1896 in current building in Horní Ročov.
Contemporary village has got upgraded public utilities. There is a complete elementary school, nursery, doctor´s surgery, pharmacy, post-office, three restaurants, grocery, mixed goods shop, textiles shop and a petrol station. Water mains has worked for over a hundred years and the village has been supplied with gas.
Economic life is based on "Podlesí holders´ agricultural cooperative ", the biggest hop producer of the republic. Several firms are trading in the village: locksmith´s , two car repair shops, a joinery, a construction company, fuels shop, a haulage firm.
Transport services in the village are on good level. There is a direct bus line from Ročov to the district town Louny or in opposite direction to the road Prague - Karlovy Vary ( the village Řevníčov ) and a railway line in direction Louny - Rakovník, stop Solopysky.
Dolní Ročov was an independent village until early 20th century. In 1373 Albrecht of Kolovraty founded here the Augustinian – hermits cloister. The cloister survived number of disasters and went thru a few redevelopments made by significant baroque artists, such as Giovanni Santini and Kilián Ignác Dietzenhofer. Dietzenhofer´s building is nowadays the most valuable baroque sights of the region, with internal equipment of great worth.
Ročov can boast of a nice surrounding, rugged landscape and woods nearly all around referred to in the name of the region itself - "Podlesí" (the edge of a forest).
Sightseeings
The most significant monument is the Assumption of the Virgin cloister belonging to St. Augustin´s hermits Order ( OSA), „having experienced“ lots of dramatic events since its foundation. It was abandoned during the Hussite wars, recovered early in the 16th century and it didn´t reach a new upswing until 17th century. Early in the 18th century it went thru considerable redevelopment under leadership of the famous baroque builder Giovanni Santini. In 1745 cloister buildings and the church were severely damaged by rainstorm and thus in the following year began an overall reconstruction designed and run by another famous builder Kilián Ignác Dietzenhofer. It impressed today´s character on the building and thanks to the builder´s personality arose the most valuable baroque building monument around the region. Worth seeing as to internal church equipment is an argilite statue of the Virging Mary from end of the 14th century and two smaller St. Barbora and Catherine statues from the late 15th century.. Also other equipment of the cloister interieur is valuable and historically of great worth.
In Horní Ročov in the park there stands the Virgin Mary baroque sandstone statue from 1713. The St. Adalbert´s niche-shaped baroque chapel from 18th century is situated at the way out from the village in direction to Louny. The church, as mentioned above, is a neogothic reconstruction forming a sharp dominant of the village. Older housing as well as farm buildings fell victim to extensive surge of innovations held at the turn of the 19th and 20th century.
Remarkable are protected trees: a massive yew-tree in the garden of the yard no. 1, age of which is estimated to 400 years, in addition about 200 years old limes in the square and at St. Adalbert chapel.
